Palworld Breeding Guide: How Breeding Actually Works

How Palworld breeding really works: the combi-rank formula that decides the child, how to pass passive skills and IVs, and how to find the shortest breeding path for any Pal.

Breeding in Palworld looks random until you learn the one rule that decides every outcome: combi rank. Once you understand it, you can plan a path to any Pal (including the rare ones) instead of guessing. This guide covers the formula, passive-skill and IV inheritance, and how to let the breeding calculator do the math for you.

What you need to breed

To breed in Palworld you need a Breeding Farm, a male and a female Pal, and a Cake (made from flour, berries, milk, eggs, and honey). Drop the two parents into the farm, leave a Cake in the box, and an egg appears. The species of the Pal inside that egg is not random. It is determined by the two parents.

The rule that decides the child: combi rank

Every Pal has a hidden combi rank (also called breeding power). When you pair two Pals, the game does this:

  1. Average the two parents' combi ranks: child rank = floor((rankA + rankB + 1) / 2).
  2. The child is the breeding-eligible Pal whose combi rank is closest to that number.
  3. Ties break toward the Pal with the lowest internal index.

That is the whole system for normal combos. Two consequences worth memorizing:

  • Same + same = same. Breeding two of the same species always yields that species.
  • A low-rank parent + a high-rank parent lands you somewhere in the middle of the rank table, which is how you "walk" toward a target Pal in a few steps.

Special (unique) combos

Some Pals ignore the averaging rule and only come from a specific named pairing. Most legendaries and many variants work this way. A few examples:

  • Paladius + Lunaris → Selyne
  • Cryolinx + Dazemu → Cryolinx Terra
  • Most Lux / Cryst / Ignis / Terra / Noct variants have their own dedicated combo.

You cannot reach these by averaging. You need the exact parents. Our per-Pal breeding pages list the exact pairs for each one (e.g. how to breed any Pal), and the calculator knows them all.

Passing passive skills

The child can inherit passive skills from both parents. You do not control exactly which ones carry over, but the principle is simple: the desirable passives can only be inherited if a parent already has them. So to build a Pal with, say, Lucky, Swift, and Musclehead, you first get those passives onto the parents, then breed. Each generation concentrates the traits you want and drops the ones you do not.

This is where breeding becomes a project: you are not breeding once, you are breeding a chain that carries the passives forward. The calculator's solver accounts for this and optimizes for the passives you select.

Passing IVs

Individual values (IVs) for HP, Attack, and Defense can also pass from parent to child, so a carefully bred line can stack both the species you want and strong stats + the right passives. If you are min-maxing a combat or work Pal, breed from parents that already have high IVs in the stat you care about.

Let the calculator plan the path

Working out a multi-step chain by hand (picking intermediate species so the ranks average toward your target while carrying passives) is exactly the kind of bookkeeping software is good at. Our free breeding calculator does it in your browser: pick the Pal you want, tell it which Pals you already own and which passives you are chasing, and it returns the shortest breeding path. No download, no save-file upload, works on Mac, Steam Deck, and mobile.
